The Pretender Episode Guide
A trip down memory lane.
Episode Guide | Survival
What stands out about this episode is that it feels in many ways like a bit of a throwback episode. Specifically, that Jarod’s investigation utilizes many of the odd offbeat techniques that we saw so much of early in the series. This show was heavy with scenes of Jarod in his lair, alone, figuring things out with the odd resources at hand; the training dummy for example pays off three times, the Pretender-like way he figures out the ‘Abyss’ scar by connecting the dots, and his use of pretender skills when tracking down the supposedly untraceable rangers.
Then there’s the takedown, which is psychotically Pretender, right up there with the craziest of them.
Finally, the Lyle/Miss P trapped in a train car puzzle is classic Jarod manipulation, all with the goal of sending Miss Parker a clear message about what her brother Lyle is all about, and that her survival is about watching her back. The B story even finishes with a smile for the audience, when at the end Miss Parker discovers the train car has been shipped to the Centre loading dock.
