The Pretender Episode Guide
A trip down memory lane.
Episode Guide | Corn Man A Comin’
Corn Man A Comin’
From an excellent script by Mark Dodson, that was both subtle and full of tension and deceit, ‘CORN MAN’ was a show that epitomized the thematic of ‘The Pretender’. Secrets and lies permeate both the Jarod and Centre storylines and the search for the truth is what fuels the character’s passions.
Jarod knows the people on the videotape the kidnapped women made are lying to him about not knowing the whereabouts of the mother and daughter, but he doesn’t know why, and just like in every lie there is a twist to be discovered.
Same thing on Miss Parker’s side of the story but with a much more gut-wrenching payoff. Four years of searching for the truth about her mother’s murder or suicide brings her to her mother’s gravesite with a shovel and the tormenting curiosity that leaves her no choice but to dig for answers. And when the casket is opened, she realizes that her journey has only just begun, her cycle of despair never ending.
‘CORN MAN A COMIN” was an excellent episode and we wish we had more that were this good.
The casting of this show was somewhat of a family reunion. Katie Mitchell starred as the kidnapped mom, Nancy Wright. Katie (Steve Mitchell’s sister) also starred in two other episodes, Season One’s ‘UNDER THE REDS’ as an emergency room doctor and in Season Two she again donned medical scrubs in ‘NIP AND TUCK’ as an evil plastic surgeon. Dean Norris, the excellent actor who played the Sheriff in this episode, also starred as a guard in ‘THE PRISON STORY’ in Season One. And the actor who uttered the words, “Corn man a comin’” with such unsettling fervor is Jack Kehler. Jack is just an incredible character actor, who we love to work with. Besides his role as Newt in CORN MAN, he also graced us with his immense talent in Season One as Big Bob, the back woods wanderer, constantly in search of Little Bob his pet pig in ‘RANGER JAROD’ and he also was a scene-stealer in the 3rd season’s finale ‘DONOTERASE’.
Another great actress was in this episode and deserves mention as another young talent we were fortunate enough to work with before they became big stars. That actress is Erika Christensen. In all my years in casting, I had never seen such an amazing young actress do a cold reading. She was supposed to read three scenes, but after the first scene, I stopped her and told her to go to wardrobe. She was great. It was actually during the filming of ‘CORN MAN A COMIN” that Erika was cast in ‘TRAFFIC’, a role that no doubt will send her on to stardom, a stardom she very well deserves.
