The Pretender Episode Guide
A trip down memory lane.
Episode Guide | Unsinkable
Argyle is back, baby, and Atlantic City’s got him! He’s got Jarod too, suckered in by a phony ploy that Jarod tries to walk away from, only to finally stay to help given his empathy for pathetic sad sack, Argyle.
Truth be known, the Argyle episodes (mainly, the final two, played almost strictly for laughs) were among the most fun shows we ever did. We approached them with comic and story-telling abandon, almost anything goes and about everything did. After ‘Unforgotten’, we saw a great chemistry between the Jarod and Argyle characters and a real chance to lighten up briefly and while the stories intentionally were convoluted (this one, you might recall, starts with Jarod chained up underwater, narrating the story in flashback, as to how he got there), that was part of the ridiculous fun. At the same time, we never forgot that pathos is as important to comedy, as jokes are and with the side stories involving Argyle’s dad (the great Kenneth Mars), each episode had it’s warm moments, that we’re proud to say, were genuinely touching.
The Centre story is also told in flashback, with Miss Parker opening up to Syd about her ‘friend’, Thomas. This story is very touching and works extremely well set against the broadness of the Jarod/Argyle romp. Much credit to writer Carlos Coto here, crafting a small B story that says so much about Miss Parker’s growing love for Thomas and her ever-present sadness about her mother.
The button to all this madness was probably one of most ludicrous tags — Cardinal Jarod arranging for Argyle and his dad to get an F to F with the Pope himself. Hey, if you have to pretend — why not shoot for the top!?
The original actor we nearly hired to portray Argyle’s dad was the legendary Buddy Hackett. Due to a scheduling conflict though, he had to bow out. Wow, Buddy Hackett or Kenneth Mars — two of the all time greats — we couldn’t lose either way, and we didn’t!
