The Pretender Episode Guide
A trip down memory lane.
Episode Guide | Hazards
Teleplay by: Juan Carlos Coto
Directed by: Chuck Bowman
Original Air Date: 1-10-98
Jarod becomes a haz-mat expert to clear the reputation of another haz-mat worker blamed for the death of three of his co-workers.
‘Hazards’ has some excellent moments in it and is one of the earliest ‘instant pretends’ (Jarod jumping into a pretend at the last moment not having planned for it). As we’ve said before, the key to this one was the emotional hook into the story for Jarod, the scene at the bus stop bench, where a stranger boasts about his wife and children, about how they are his life, then an instant later, calmly steps in front of a bus to try and kill himself. In the writer’s room it was always ‘why does Jarod take on this pretend?’ and in this case it was a great hook; why would a man who has everything Jarod wants in life (his own family) try to kill himself?
On the Centre side, we were blessed with the casting of the legendary Theodore Bikel as the nemesis out of Sydney’s past. Blessed also with a strong and moving performance by our own Patrick Bauchau. This was the first Pretender directed by Chuck Bowman (father of Rob Bowman, director of the X-Files feature and dozens of X-files episodes). Chuck quickly became one of our ‘go to’ guys.
