The Pretender Episode Guide
A trip down memory lane.
Episode Guide | Scott Free
When you have only five days in between seasons to get back to work, the greatest gift someone can give you is a shootable (i.e. filmable) first draft script. That’s what Tommy Thompson gave us shortly after we started season two (from a story by he and Carlos Coto). Dramatically taut and emotionally touching, “Scott Free” was one of those slam dunk episodes that just seems to fire on all cylinders.
It also marked the first time we gave our pretender a physical affliction as a part of his regular pretend when he took on the personae of R.H. or “Right Hand” Cross, a one armed (one functioning arm) safecracker of some repute. Needless to say, Michael T. not only welcomed the challenge, he hit it out of the park — which only got our juices flowing to come up with more ‘challenging’ pretends.
To be assured of factual accuracy, we hired an ex-thief to come in one day to teach us the ins and outs of such criminal pursuits as pick pocketing, car hotwiring and forgery. True story – he even brought his own long-retired safecracking drill bits.
