Stolen

2.18Stolen1083-1Another solid, above average episode with good emotional punch. Here, Jarod confronts his own kidnapping (which we dramatized for the first time) by plunging himself into a present day abduction.

Again, for a lot of the same reasons ‘Red Rock Jarod’ works so well, this one does too. A favorite moment is the capture of Jarod by Miss Parker, Syd, Sam and Willie that is loaded with tension and so true to the characters, that it resonates very well. The kidnapper has just told Jarod that he only has mere minutes to save the abducted boy’s life, and Jarod is about to go rescue the boy when he’s captured. Miss Parker has been burned by Jarod so many times, she doesn’t believe his story. Meanwhile, Sydney stops Willie from shooting Jarod, because of his paternal-like protectiveness and when Jarod leaps from the window, he scares the hell out of Broots waiting in the car (no doubt Miss P made him stay there like a punished puppy).

But, the best character beat and one that we debated a long time on, was the moment when Jarod physically gets his hands on the kidnapper. After a lot of thought, we felt that the character (and Michael T. as an actor) should ‘go for it’, that Jarod’s lifelong rage at being kidnapped himself, would and should, manifest itself in this moment. What transpires, is a primal scene, climaxing in that split second where Jarod is about to kill this man with his bare hands unless he stops himself. It is one of the few times the normally even-keeled Jarod has lost control of his own takedown and is interesting to watch.

2.18Stolen0533-1Though the network thought our original cut of this scene was a bit too brutal on Jarod’s part, they loved seeing him out of control as well. Ultimately, we pulled it back a bit in the editing room to what it is now.

As a funny side note, we still get a chuckle out of the dramatic license we took in the foot chase where Jarod outruns Willie the sweeper, to escape in a truck. What’s funny about that? Willie the Sweeper is played by Willie Gault, Olympic track star and one time wide receiver for the Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears, and at one time considered to be one of the world’s fastest men.
