Bulletproof
One of the challenges a show faces as it progresses, is keeping stories fresh, and trying not to repeat itself. With ‘Bulletproof’, we took another foray into the police world and whenever we did revisit a pretend ‘area’, (in this case, the police) we’d always strive to find a new element. This time, we put Jarod into a SWAT unit. The other element and wrinkle that we really responded to, was writer Mark Dodson’s twist of having Jarod takedown, not one, but a group of bad guys, the first ever conspiracy-villain if you will.
But the one element that really sparked us into pursuing this one was Dodson’s take on the ‘B’ story — the revelation that Sydney had a son out there and a past love. These are the kind of dramatic revelations that keep the fires burning in a writing staff, and of course, the audience responds to so well. Fans of the series always want to know more about the Centre, as they followed those characters on a weekly basis. And up to now, Sydney had been somewhat shrouded in mystery (intentionally, of course). Giving Syd more of a past and opening up possibilities for the future, seemed like the thing to do with him at this point, and it worked well in this episode.
In the scene where Jarod inspects the police target range, he methodically digs bullets he’s suspicious about out of two pop-up photo targets; if you look closely you’ll know why he’s suspicious — the photos on the targets are of two of the most unsavory executive producers we know — us.
