The Pretender Episode Guide
A trip down memory lane.
Episode Guide | The Pilot
When you write a pilot and create a character, you get to know them very well in your mind and on paper. But, you never know how they will transfer to the screen. In the casting process you hear hundreds of actors interpret your words, some sound like the character, but a rare few become the character, literally before your eyes. With Michael T. Weiss and Andrea Parker, we got to see our characters leap from the page in a way that we’d never experienced before.
The only question was, whether the camera could capture it. Those questions were put to rest during the first days filming. It all happened on a hospital rooftop in Toronto, Ontario. The first scene shot was of Dr. Jarod drawing massage points on the feet of Mrs. Nikos, the elderly Greek patient who was afraid of modern medicine. During the first take when Michael T. looked at Mrs. Nikos, we knew it would work. He was so caring, so intelligent, so human – so Jarod. Next, it was Andrea and Patrick’s turn.
The scene where they thought they’d chased Jarod to the rooftop of the hospital only to look over the side and see he’d duped them for the first of many times to come. Andrea and Patrick became Miss Parker and Sydney, before our eyes, and our smiles couldn’t have been larger. It was working.
Michael T. Weiss was the only actor brought to the network for the part of Jarod. We knew he was the only actor right for the part, and decided that if NBC didn’t want him to play Jarod then there was no reason to go forward with the show. To the credit of Warren Littlefield and the other NBC executives at the time, they agreed with our choice – and we were, and are damn happy, they did.
